Rather than the usual ‘grab sword / attack with sword’ system, Even actually needs to roll Dicey to determine what weapons and attacks she can use at any given moment - and to unlock Dicey, she needs to smash crystals that grow on enemies. This determines everyone’s position in society, where they live, and who they can interact with. Made by the makers of Fe, you play as Even, a young girl living in a dystopia where everyone is assigned a class based on the roll of a dice. It owes a lot to Tim Burton with its spindly, Nightmare-style towns, but the adventure carves out its own identity with stop-motion animation and a whimsical, slightly horrifying narrative. If you’re somebody who enjoys the comedy-horror tones of films like Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas, or games like Alice: Madness Returns and MediEvil, you’ll want to put Lost in Random on your wishlist. Lost in Randomis a game that’s flown under the radar this month, but it’s bursting with personality and an aesthetic that honestly blew my mind.
